說到美國名校，大家可能會先想起常春藤聯盟八校。事實上，美國除了常春藤仍有不少名校選擇。例如著名的麻省理工學院、芝加哥大學及史丹福大學等。它們在排名與學術地位上可謂與常春藤相差無幾，排名甚至勝過常春藤聯盟內部分院校。
以下是部分非藤名校的排名及其特色：
Stanford University：
US News 最新排名全美第六，排名領先數所常春藤，從錄取率可知，該校收生也十分嚴謹，只有約5%。同時採取小班教學，大部分課堂一班少於20人。
麻省理工大學：
於國立大學排名中與哥倫比亞大學並列第三，僅次於普林斯頓大學及哈佛大學。除了著名於理工學科外，該校的政治及經濟學科亦排名靠前。該校更設有獨特的獨立活動計畫，除了能於世界一流的研究設施內學習最新科技外，亦有特別課程供學生發展專長。
The University of Chicago：
常年穩居各種排名前十，是一所綜合型大學。該校於科學界的影響力舉足輕重，是不少諾貝爾獎得主與科學界名人的母校，例如「原子能之父」。

為什麼要選擇非常春藤學校？
實際上，部分排名靠後的常春藤學校已經顯現「老態龍鍾」的窘境，甚至出現「新常春藤聯盟」的說法。不同名校就如雨後春筍般，部分非藤院校排名已經超越常春藤末端，常春藤聯盟已不再是頂尖名校的唯一選擇。
